  • Power: it’s at its best in all types of waves.
  • Shape: it can handle it all but glassy waves are what you’re looking for.
GONG | Surf Carter EPS
Shape
Sleek shape

Stylish lines but above all performance with a flawless glide. The Carter is shaped for perfect carves. Smooth and easy to paddle, radical turns are right up its alley if you want to take it there. Both simple and effective. In small sizes, the Carter will easily replace your shortboard, but with more style and roundness. In intermediate sizes, we enter the world of mid-lengths, pleasure and efficiency. And in larger sizes, make way for the cruiser and its endless glide.

Rocker: very progressive for the most natural carves possible.

Rails: thin to only think about carves.

Volume: harmoniously distributed and placed mainly at the front 2/3, generous but without excess for an early take-off and crazy performances.

Outline: a beautiful round pin tail to combine carves and speed, a relatively thin and advanced max width for stability at high speed, and a sufficiently supportive nose to get going from afar.

Tail: rounded pin tail to combine speed and maneuverability.

Nose: rounded point nose for paddling fast and coping with steep waves.

Deck: domed to maintain thin rails and thickness in the center.

Bottom: double concave at the tail for maximum control, vee in the center for good rail-to-rail rocking, and belly at the nose for a soft touch at high speeds.

Fins: single + 2 side fins

Thin rails

At first glance, its lines with a harmonious outline stand out. The shape feels perfectly balanced. It reveals a subtle mix of old school lines and performance; of tradition and modernity. The Carter adapts to your level, from the average surfer to the most experienced. With a comfortable outline and smooth carves, the Carter retains its accessible and versatile character, but its revisited shape becomes more feline, more incisive.

Round pin tail

With a tri-fin set-up, it’s stunning and 100% modern. The 2+1 fin set-up makes it a very round board in the carves while maintaining acceleration. Set up with twin fins, you get a magical glide and an extraordinary flow. In single, you open the doors wide open for style. A must have in a quiver, the board for those who love glide and magical carves.

Buying guide

For whom?

Into surf culture, its history, beautiful boards, fluid lines and style?

It is even suitable for a beginner who wants to treat himself with a beautiful board that she/he will keep for the rest of her/his life. So if you have a good level of surfing, you will love it.

Good surfers and pros love the Carter for its rounded, relaxed and stylish lines. Everything is easy and it works all the time.

For what?

Drop very early! The Carter is unbeatable in this area. It is the first board to glide and the first one back in the line-up. A great paddler that can beat longboarders and SUPers.

Link beautiful carves together, in a magical roundness.

Cruise down-the-line and just enjoy its magical glide, sometimes with a nice cheater hang five in the pocket.

To not switch to an SUP board or a longboard and keep a style of surfing based on carves and wave work.

Traveling with a single board can be a challenge in difficult conditions but it builds up an osmosis with a board that’s easy in 95% of waves.

Which size?

Below 6’8 to favor turns. It’s still a shortboard but very soft.

From 6’8 to 8’3 we are clearly talking about mid-lengths, halfway between the quality of glide of a longboard and the turns of a shortboard. The board to do everything easily!!!

From 9′ to 9’8 we switch to a cruiser style of board, a long board which drops before everyone else and which cruises down-the-line for beautiful cutbacks and re-entries.

What are the perfect waves for it?

Size: from knee high to double overhead.

Power: it works in all types of waves but prefers waves with some power, without pushing it to scary slabs.

Shape: it can handle it all but glassy waves are what you’re looking for.

Which fin set-up?

One of the advantages of the 2+1 set-up is that you can experiment with several fin set-ups:

  • The 2+1 fin set-up is the one that will bring the most versatility to the board. It offers excellent grip when engaging a turn on the rail. It will be faster than a single set-up because the side fins boost acceleration by pulling the rail towards the inside of the curve. The central fin is less massive than for a single fin set-up, therefore more playful. And this is a key factor: the distribution of surfaces between the three fins. The more surface we put in the central fin, the more stable and progressive the 2+1 set-up will be. The more surface we put in the side fins (and therefore less on the central one), the more playful and faster the 2+1 will be. A large central fin acts a bit like an autopilot which will smooth out your line.
  • The single fin set-up is often favored on noseriders, boards on which we will look for maximum glide before planning on the fins. A sufficiently deep fin also allows you to stabilize the tail of your board at the top of a wave without skidding, thus leaving maximum time to stay on the nose. We also see single setups on glider boards, mid-lengths designed to glide down the line and engage long turns. In this case we will choose a single fin with a lot of rake so as not to lock the carves.
  • On mid-length boards like the Carter, you can even consider switching to a twin set-up with two large side fins. This set-up is less stable but it offers a lot of natural glide and a lot of drive when you put the board on the rail to catch a section. This is in theory the fastest setup because it generates less drag than the 2+1 setup. You might wanna check with your GPS watches! ?
  • The trifin set-up, made of three fins of the same depth and generally the same outline, offers maximum maneuverability. This is the ideal setup to cut the carves short and radicalize your surfing as much as possible. In this case, move the central fin way back so as not to have an uncontrollable board.

Which shape to choose?

  • Carter or Pie?

Though the Pie is also available in a wide range of lengths, it is very different from the Carter. It’s rather complementary. We love the Pie for its acceleration, especially on flat sections. Its tail makes you fly at mach 12. In the high end, it can give you such lift that it will make tightening carves or holding on to vertical faces without slowing down difficult. This is where the Carter offers a different choice with its almost pinched tail. You won’t get going as early as with a Pie, but it will offer unlimited control in hollow sections and at high speed.

So beyond an obvious choice depending on the type of waves encountered, soft waves for the Pie and powerful for the Carter, you must focus on the style. A Pie will naturally generate speed while a Carter will need to be stimulated. In reality, we will mainly surf them in two different sections of the wave. We will surf the Pie on so-called horizontal turns, with a lot of pressure on the back foot and on rather flat sections. And conversely we will surf the Carter in the pocket, as close as possible to the curl, with a lot of pressure on the front foot. Two very different styles ?

  • Carter or shortboard?

The Carter has many of the characteristics of a shortboard, but without ever really being one. With what we call a shortboard, of competition type, we seek explosiveness while we seek for glide and fluidity with a Carter.

So even on seemingly similar dimensions, we will have a completely different feeling and produce very different turns. From there to saying that the Carter is the cool version of the shortboard, there is only one step.

  • Carter or longboard?

The Carter in larger sizes is close to a longboard, but it will paddle much faster. We’re going to drop early, that’s obvious. It will also hold better on hollow waves with its nose which grips less and which is reassuring. It’s obvious in tubes where we have real aptitude in Carter whereas it’s rather counterintuitive or sketchy when on a longboard.

Another major difference is the restriction of the range of possible maneuvers with the Carter compared to a longboard. Even if a few cheater hang fives can look great on the Carter, we are far from being able to pull the full range of moves on the nose we could with a longboard. But if these moves don’t appeal to you that much, the Carter is probably the best choice.

How to properly glue your pads?

The question of the pad often comes down to an aesthetic choice for the look of your board. But what seems like luxury to non-pros is actually a huge help.
If surfing is the art of placement then you need to put your feet properly on the board. And what better than a touch marker to know, ok, I’m at the sweet spot for this turn.?

Sticking good pads is therefore essential. They will signal to your feet whether they are in the perfect position or not.
You still have to stick them properly, and some get very creative…
